Bob's father owned the Raymer Hardware Company in St. Paul,
which had provided the hardware for the Mayo Clinic when it was
being constructed. Bob's grandfather, who originally established the
Raymer Hardware Company, invented a lever-type door opener
for the clinic that allowed no-hands opening of doors for personnel
whose hands were full carrying supplies and equipment. Bob's father
died suddenly when Bob was only 26, leaving him to preside over
the company. A while later, Bob sold the hardware company
in order to continue his career in aviation.
