You finally have time to sit down at your computer. You open your web browser and stare at the cursor blinking in the search bar thinking, I don’t even know where to start. You type in a simple search like “[Insert region] wedding photographers”…and get about 30,000 search results. COME ON.
So many brides have been in your shoes. Choosing a wedding photographer can be difficult with so many photographers, so many price and package differences, and so many referrals and opinions from friends and family.
It’s easy to google tips for finding the perfect wedding photographer, but so many people search the internet first instead of searching themselves.
To help you figure that out, we want to share our top 4 steps, in order, for choosing a wedding photographer.
What do you value when it comes to your wedding images? Why are you hiring a wedding photographer? If you’re not sure, ask yourself this question:
Answering this question will help you discern what YOU value when it comes to wedding photography and will clarify what kind of photographer you’re looking for. It’s great to find a photographer whose pricing fits in your budget, one who has a beautiful website or Instagram profile, one who can answer all your questions, but when it comes down to it, the most important connection point lies in shared values.
What kind of photographic style do you prefer? Do you want a photographer who’s photojournalistic , one who will shoot with a documentary-like style, shooting mostly spontaneous, unposed images? Do you want a photographer who shoots classic portraiture, one similar to the photographer who shot your parents’ wedding album, with beautifully lit and posed portraits? Do you want a photographer who uses unique angles and dramatic light? Or do you a photographer whose images are bright, airy, and romantic? Explore what styles you’re drawn to in terms of posing, light, editing, etc. before reaching out to specific photographers.
Reach out to a photographer or photographers who match your style preferences. Ask some questions and get a feel for their personalities. Would you enjoy having that person present for the majority of your wedding day? Your photographer(s), even when they blend in well, will be present for every almost every intimate moment, every celebration, every bridezilla moment, and every tear of joy. Choose someone who’s both professional and relatable. In other words, pick someone you like!
This is the step a lot of couples jump to right away, BUT we think it’s SO important to explore and think about what you’re really wanting FIRST. Once you have an idea of what you’re really looking for, it’s time to ask about the details. (Don’t get us wrong, it’s okay to ask about price range or cost during the Connection step to make sure you’re not completely wasting your time or a photographer’s.) Now’s the time to ask questions about pricing, packages, products, etc.
Happy searching! If you’re going through this process and think you’d like to connect with Kaleb and me to find out more about Pen and Lens, feel free to contact us here. If not, we hope you find the photographer who will be the best fit for you!
Wedding photography is my heartbeat. I love capturing the interactions between the bride and her tribe as they get ready together, the look on a groom’s face when he FINALLY sees his bride for the first time, and the way a dad wraps his arms around his baby girl on her wedding day. Bride and groom portraits make my heart jump and I cry on almost every wedding day.
